I hadn't realized I was dead.
Back when I was younger, I once made a straw man arguement to a friend that we aren't our flesh and bones, but actually the composite of all of our beliefs, ethics, etc. I said that if one lost their entire memory, then in effect they would be dead and a new person would exist in their body.
Obviously, I hadn't realized yet just how much our understanding and reactions induce chemical and neurological changes in our body, so on and such forth. Our experiences influence the meat (and the meat influences our reactions) much more than I ever imagined at the time. But I digress...
The thing which struck me was that the person who said this was now dead. I inhabit his body.
